Space is Power

In the design and real estate world, we throw around the word "space" constantly. "This is such a beautiful space!" or "What kind of space are you looking for?" or "I want the space to feel vibrant and bright"...

What is space? Space can be abstract, meaning it is simply the area in which we inhabit. A company is looking for space to open their new office. A friend is looking for space to start her new painting hobby. Space can be a tangible environment we create through buildings, materials, the outdoors, etc.. Your house can consist of many "spaces" that you curate to create a type of environment. For me, the spot next to our window in the living room is one of my favorite spaces. My Randers armchair, marble and bongo drum side table, Asian-inspired foot stool and ficus tree elevate this spot and make it uniquely my own. Cue Sunday morning tea and Vanity Fair magazine, and I am transported to a blissful state.

Why all this talk about space? We all have the power to create our own and *newsflash*, it can be a game changer. Whether you live with 4 roommates in a 2.5 bedroom house (a-la my early 20's) or have purchased your dream vacation home by the beach, take the time to think about what type of space you like to be in and create it! Get inspired by walking around your neighborhood or city, browse through design blogs like Design Milk, Dwell, The Painted Hive. Browse websites like Fab.com, Gilt and One King's Lane for killer sale items or get help by hiring an online designer via Havenly.com.

Space can inspire the next business idea or encourage the least motivated of workers. Space can bring you happiness and make you feel at home. Being more mindful about what space you invest in and what you bring in to it is a powerful thing. Choose wisely.
